Benson Entrepreneur Awards

This national annual award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the Australian ICT Industry. It is sponsored by CSIRO in memory of a great Australian ICT pioneer, Tony Benson.

The selection is made from a set of nominations across Australia, one from each State and Territory in Australia.  Usually each State or Territory nomination will be the winner of the current or a previous Pearcey State Entrepreneur Award, though each state committee has latitude to select any other suitable candidate.

The award is aimed at an outstanding entrepreneur who has “taken a risk”, “made a difference” and “is an inspiration”:

The "risk" is a measure of the extent to which they have crusaded a new business and/or technology, particularly in their own venture. The idea is that the winner has gone out on a limb to achieve things, rather than achieving things as part of their normal job.

The "difference" is related to both commercial success and impact in our ICT industry. The idea is that the winner has to be more than just successful, their success should also have a measurable/notable impact in the industry.

The “inspiration” is about the type of person they are. The winner should be a role model, especially for younger ICT aspirers, and be an advocate of the Australian ICT industry.

Pearcey Medal

In memory of Australia’s great ICT pioneer Dr Trevor Pearcey, one Australian each year is honoured with the Pearcey Medal.

The medal is awarded for "outstanding lifetime achievement and contribution to the development and growth of the IT professions, research and industry".

The Pearcey Medal criteria are “distinguished lifetime achievement and contribution to the development and growth of the Information Technology professions, research, and industry”.

That is, a person who, like Trevor Pearcey, has by hard work, intelligence, and dedication, made a major and continuing contribution to Australia's and the world's IT industry and research and gives us a further example of what Australian's can and have achieved in this industry.

The key considerations brought to bear in assessing Pearcey Medal nominees are as follows:

  • a contribution which is above and beyond what could be considered appropriate to the job functions performed,
  • a contribution which has included research, industry, and professional development, together with public service, and
  • an individual who can be characterised by their modesty and a willingness to take on unrewarding tasks in furthering our industry.
