Table Talks - (Merit Recipient)

NSW

Table Talks is a never before seen solution to a huge problem. People’s hearing gets worse as they get older, that’s a fact. However, most of those people still want to participate in normal conversation - and that’s where Table Talks comes in. Table Talks listens to a conversation, and displays what is being said to those who can’t normally hear it. The idea for Table Talks came from dinner-table conversations with my grandparents. Even though they have hearing aids they can’t always make out what is being said and so they feel left out. By having the conversation displayed for them on their tablet they know what’s going on and can participate fully. Table Talks is a versatile and effective tool that can be used on PCs, laptops, smartphones and tablets.

Reading Republic - an app for book loving kids - (Merit Recipient)

NSW

Reading Republic encourages kids to read in a child friendly environment where you can read and write book reviews. It’s an android app and website that gets kids to review books, take quizzes about the books they’ve read and collect coins that unlock mini games. The reviews allow kids to get a better understanding of what the book is about and the level of reading difficulty. Reviews can be read, listened to, or even watched, catering for all levels of students. Other reading apps are too expensive and don’t allow kids to interact and share their thoughts about the books they are reading. Reading Republic is designed for kids by kids. Reading Republic is utilising technology to assist with the development of kid’s literacy skills and it’s a great example of new technology supporting older forms of entertainment like reading.

The Mass Platform - Kidtechnic (Merit Recipient)

ACT

The Mass Mechanism solves the suspension issue faced by many 4 wheeled robots. The mechanism enables the robots to maintain 4 contact points with the ground when manoeuvering over obstacles one third of the robot’s height. This also allows the robot to shift its weight when climbing large obstacles. Mass is different from traditional solutions as this mechanism doesn’t use springs or any other unpredictable system. Rather, mass uses gears to maintain all contact points to the ground. This solution overall could have huge benefits for land based disaster robots as they will be able to manoeuvre over more complicated rubble and be more efficent in moving.

An Aspie Life - (Winner)

QLD

Autism cannot be seen, it cannot be heard, and it cannot be experienced by people unless you have it. You cannot describe autism because it is so complex, and how do you explain your life if you don’t know what ‘real’ life is like? So how can the public’s opinion on autism change? By allowing people to experience what it is like to be an Aspie (Asperger’s) through a game. “An Aspie Life” brings to life the hard and commonly misunderstood world of autism. By having players play out the life of an autistic person, their actions in the game will have to adapt to how an autistic person sees the world in an ordinary everyday life. The game is hopefully going to change the public perception or at least make people realise, what autism “really” is.

Digitran - (Merit Recipient)

TAS

Our student team developed a unique mobile platform to fulfil a vital need in the sustainability space for our university. We digitised the capture, collection and collation of sustainable transportation survey data via two mobile applications, feeding this digital dataset into an online database and portal. This innovation is unique because it solves some major issues with the current process, namely inaccuracy of the capture mechanism (paper & clipboards) and transcription errors (the transcription of the paper entries into usable digital data). Our applications were iteratively designed from the ground using user centric design principles such as ease of use, clarity of input requirement and a feedback loop during development. Our software fills a key need in our university by easily, intuitively and accurately capturing sustainable transportation data. Which in turn enables the university to deliver sustainable outcomes for its staff and students.

VICHyper Hyperloop Team - (Winner)

VIC

The discussion on the best mode of public transport for short distances (<1000 km) is a complex issue, particularly around the definition of “best”, and included factors such as cost, environmental impact, infrastructure, travel time, comfort and job creation. However, given the growth in high speed rail capacity in Europe and Japan in particular, it shows that high speed train is a competitive mode of transport and these countries have made significant investment in improving their high speed rail network. The VicHyper design takes the rail transport a quantum step forward by presenting an innovative transportation system that offers travel speeds similar to aircraft speeds (560 km/hour), but maintains the benefits of rail transportation. This new system will challenge air transportation on medium range (>2000 km), for example Melbourne to Brisbane.
